Doctors' Answers to "Frequently Asked Questions" - Anafranil

These comments are made for the purpose of discussion and should NOT be used as recommendations for or against therapies or other treatments. An individual patient is always advised to consult their own physician.

Question: What is this drug? If it is an antidepressant, would it replace Zoloft? What are the contraindications, side effects, etc.?

Answer: Anafranil is a tri-cyclic antidepressant used in obsessive disorders. This differs markedly from Zoloft or other SRI type antidepressants. Zoloft is used in obsessive disorders as is Anafranil, but they are adjuncts and will not "replace" each other, since some respond to one and some to another. Side effects are somnolence, tremor, headache, insomnia, increased appetite, increased sweating, dry mouth, fatigue, and flushing. Contraindications are pre-existing mania or psychosis, or ongoing surgery.
