Doctors' Answers to "Frequently Asked Questions" - Chewable Tablets

These comments are made for the purpose of discussion and should NOT be used as recommendations for or against therapies or other treatments. An individual patient is always advised to consult their own physician.

Chewable tablets
Question: My 3 year old occasionally spits out liquid medicine. The chewable tablets seem to work better because they can be gathered and re-taken if spit out. Would the chewable form of medicine constitute a medical necessity, since with antibiotics, it is necessary to take a ten day treatment?

Answer: This would depend on your insurance companyís rules. Check with them concerning the rules for medical necessity. Usually, since chewable tablets are similarly priced, they probably would not mind.
