Doctors' Answers to "Frequently Asked Questions" - Diuretics

These comments are made for the purpose of discussion and should NOT be used as recommendations for or against therapies or other treatments. An individual patient is always advised to consult their own physician.

Diuretics [posted 7/17/98]
Question: Is Hydrochlorothiazide (Merck) the generic version of Triamteren/HCTZ (Geneva Pharm.)? Are there any complications associated with Hydrochlorothiazide?

Answer: These are not equivalent drugs. The triamterene is a potassium sparing diuretic that is paired with hydrochlorthiazide(hctz) to avoid some of the risk of low potassium with hctz. The usual risks are low potassium, sodium, elevated cholesterol, elevated glucose.
