Question: Hello,
I have a son, age 13, who has DBA. He currently tranfuses 3 units of PRBC's every 3 weeks. He chelates (Desferral) 5x weekly subcutenously. My question is... I heard that there might be a drug out (Proactin??) that stimulates red blood cell growth? Do you have any info or know where I can go to get more info. I am under the impression it is being used in cancer patients. Any help is appreciated.

Answer: Epigen is the brand name. It is a copy of a hormone made by the kidney to stimulate red blood cell production. Available for over 5 years so no secret. Discuss it with your doctor to see if it has any place here.
