Question: My son has been taking neoral and imuran for 4 years now due to a heart transplant. He is now having trouble with his kidneys. He is going to be tested. What types of problems can he have with his kidneys, and what can be done about it? What can be the long term affects, he is only 4.
Answer: The drugs used to treat organ rejection can affect renal function and cause renal failure. His physicians will have to determine if the drugs are responsible and if he can use an alternative that is less renal toxic. Pretty common problem unfortunately.
