Anesthesia [posted 1/14/99]
Question: I had hand surgery to repair 4 lacerated extensor tendons. My surgeon and
I agreed that I would have a beir block and stay awake with just a sedative during the
surgery. I was not awake, and in fact cannot remember being in PACU or the room after
recovery. I only remember getting my personal belongings from the hospital safe. I realize
that I would not remember the surgery itself, but what about after? I have a copy of the
anesthesiology report. I was given : Versed, Fentanyl and Propofol. I also had a
spirometer, capnometry, and after surgery, impaired gas exchange. Are these doses right
for staying awake during this type of surgery? I also had the lidocaine and tournaquet
plus toradol.
Answer: Versed is used to prevent memories of short term procedures. Very effective without neurologic damage.
