Recurrent E-coli [posted 10/1/98]
Question: my daughter has had ecoli 3 times now and the doctor keeps giving her medicines. They have given her a kidney altrsound and nothing showed up I have asked them what should I do next seems the medicines aren't working and they don't seem to want to answer my questions. What do you think I should do?? She's in no pain or does not complain about anything. I am worried about this and the doctor doesn't seem to be.

Answer:How old is your daughter? The usual cause is sexual activity or any pelvic pressure/trauma(horse back riding etc.) Taking a small dose of antibiotic with intercourse is very effective in women with recurrent infections. Ensure a very high fluid intake, ensure that after a bowel movement the rectal cleansing is away from the vulva and urethra. This is a common problem with women since moving feces towards the urethra will really increase the risk of subsequent infections. Many women wipe their rectum towards the urethra dating from bowel training(boys don't because the testicles are in the way).
