Question: I am having a hard time getting anwsers from the doctors. I have sclerosis of the hips. I understand it is hardening of the hips. Will it get worse? At times i have a hard time getting out of be, wakes me up due to the pain. The doctors have said , that it should not give me problems walking. I do not understand that. When I am in such pain. I have had pain off and on since I was 22 years old. Now the pain has gotten so bad the past 8 months. What is going on with me? Please help me in a direction to go.

Answer: Have you seen an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in joints or a rheumatologist? Pain in the hips of this variety usually necessitates hip replacement. Occasionally, steroid injection will help.

Closed Hip Reduction in the Emergency Department [posted 7/24/98]
Question: Do you have standards regarding medication administration for closed hip dislocation in the emergency department? Are there any additional standards that must be met to administer your medication choice, i.e. cardiac monitoring?

Answer: I'm not an orthopedic surgeon, but the reductions I have seen have usually been done in the OR. This is to assure that general anesthesia can be done is necessary, which is usually required due to the pain. The cardiac monitoring requirements would relate to the type/need for anesthesia and not the reduction itself.
