Macrodantin and treatment of STD’s
Question: What does the drug macrodantin do? Is it in any way used in the treatment of any sexually transmitted diseases?

Answer: This is an antibiotic(an older one) generally used for urinary tract infections. It is generally not used for sexually transmitted diseases. It’s occasionally used for respiratory infections.

Macrodantin
Answer: I have been prescribed by my doctor, to take macrodantin for yeast and bladder infections, but I am concerned to take it since I am 3 month pregnant. It's principle ingredient is Nitrofurantoin. Does it has any side effects?

Answer: Like many drugs, this one has not been studied in pregnant women (probably never will be). Studies in rats and mice have shown minimal fetal changes and the drug is classified as Class B, which is a low risk. This drug is used extensively in women who are not pregnant. Consequently, it has a fairly high exposure rate in early stages of pregnancy and there have been no major problems noted. Usually the drug of choice for infections during pregnancy is penicillin or an equivalent like amoxicillin, but this drug seems OK.
