Medrol
Question: I recently had half of my thyroid removed due to Thyroiditis. My doctor has me taking Medrol. Why is this drug necessary? Is it to control the autoimmunity, or for recovery from the surgery itself? What are the side effects?

Answer: The steroids is to decrease the immune response of the body. Side effects of steroids are many. In general, they accelerate the aging processes of the body. Glucose is elevated, joint surfaces experience arthritis earlier, cataracts form, hardening of the arteries accelerates, etc. The longer and the higher the dosage the more these effects occur. Smaller doses for short periods will have minimal effect.
