Needed Medications [posted 8/11/98]
Question: I need the companies' addresses that make haldol, prozac, lithium and artane. I work at a residential treatment program and I have a kid on these drugs and he is about to be released from youth corrections to live on his own. He does fine when he is on medication but will never survive in the community without it. He will no longer have a way to pay for his medications when he is released from youth corrections. He will more than likely fail in the community as he will have no way to pay for his medications. I need to know the names or addresses of these companies that make these drugs to see if they would be willing to donate medications for him.

Answer: In general, most companies have indigent programs if contacted by the physician who is treating the patient. The companies cannot legally mail the prescriptions to the patient, but must be dispensed by the physician or a pharmacy. Have his physician write to the companies (the addresses and telephone numbers are in the first section of the PDR) and contact the indigent patient department.

Epi-Pen
Question:Have you heard any problems regarding the use of an epi-pen such as medication not dispensing or needle not ejecting when administered? Also, do you hear complaints about its reliability?

Answer: The epipen is a device for administering epinephrine. It is used in allergic and other times when one needs this "hormone" to breathe. Like most mechanical devices it can malfunction. I haven't personally had any problems with my patients;but, they probably only use 2-3 per year.
