Side Effects
Question: What can be the side effects of taking this drug 50mg 2x/day for over a year and a half? Any problems with taking this antibiotic for this long? Any effects on weight gain? Any effects on kidney function?

Answer: Minocyclin belongs to the tetracycline class of antibiotics. These are commonly used for treatment of acne vulgaris on a long term basis. Side effects of this class of drug and this drug in particular are several: 1. Pregnant women should never take these drugs. Interactions with the fetus causes severe dental abnormalities. 2.Pseudotumor cerebri-this is a drug, reaction that makes it appear that the person has a brain tumor with increased intracranial pressure etc. 3. Photosensitivity-exposure to the sun can cause marked skin rashs. 4. General reactions include nausea, diarrhea, skin rashes, etc. The dose of tetracycline or any of this class should be reduced with concurrent renal insufficiency but does not appear to cause renal failure itself.
