Methylprednisone / MS
Question: I am 37 years old and was diagnosed with MS on 1-6-97. I have some problems and I am taking several drugs such as Limbtrol, Zanaflex, Dipyridamole, and Amiben. I just recently had an EMG and was given methylprednisone following and MRI of my leg, back and spine. The word prednisone scares me to death. I had Hodgkin’s Disease 114 years ago and was on all kinds of drugs, chemo etc. I gained a lot of weight within three months of my diagnosis. I’ve had to fight weight problems ever since. Will methylprednisone cause me to gain weight? Also I may have to start solumedroyl treatment. Will it make me gain again? I know this is minor compared to all my problems and I am afraid I will get some eating disorder disease if I keep thing about the P drug.

Answer: All the glucosteroids have similar side effects. These include weight gain, bone loss, cataracts, acceleration of coronary disease, occasional diabetes mellitus, and it accelerates all the aging processes of the body. The benefit is the great anti-inflammatory effect. These side effects increase with dosage and time.
