Nystatin Alternatives [posted
11/17/98]
Question: I am currently on chronic use of Ery-Tabs (3, 250mg a day) for the
treatment of Rosacea. I am also on a birth control pill, Lo/Estrin 1/20. To prevent
vaginal infections, I also
take Nystatin tablets twice a day. The Nystatin really bothers my stomach. Do you think I
could take it once a day? I did try Diflucan, with and without yogurt, and had poor
results and had to be treated for yeast.
Answer: This is a lot of systemic medications. Did you try the topical
gels for rosacea? Stopping the systemic erythromycin would allow you to stop most of the
others. As to yogurt, some countries use yogurt douches to prevent yeast infections. You
must use active yogurt(not pasteurized like in the stores) these are available from health
food stores or make your own with a yogurt maker. Use plain yogurt(no fruit etc) about a
tablespoon per pint of warm water.
NYSTATIN
Question: If possible can you tell me what a 20 year old man would use NYSTATIN
100000/GM CREAM.I know my son is sexually active, I found this medication in his room.
Answer: Nystatin is an anti-fungal cream used to kill or inhibit skin fungal
conditions. It was "found" by researchers in New York State; hence, NY STAT IN.
I really know of no sexually transmitted disease that would be treated with
Nystatin-probably one of the common skin fungal conditions.
