Animal organ transplants in humans
Question: I am a High School senior doing a report for my technology strand. The topic which I chose to write about is how technology is affecting the search for a cure for HIV. Because my topic is so broad I have pointed it in the direction of the xenotransplant. The FDA has approved the experiment and I would like to know your personal opinion about the experimentation.

Answer: I have never been a big fan of organ transplants from animals. I personally think that too much of the medical dollar is expended on "big ticket" items. In a time of shrinking resources for medical care, spending $500,000 or so on a temporary fix seems ill advised to me. I personally prefer some basic research in basic disease treatments, which will make organ transplants irrelevant over the long term.

Answer: The skin is usually considered the largest organ.

Organ Rejection
Question: About a month ago I heard on the evening news that the US military had come up with a drug that would make organ rejection a thing of the past, or they discovered a gene that would prevent organ rejection. Which ever it was it applied to just about every organ. Could you please let me know where I could find more information on the subject.

Answer: Haven't heard this one. I'd contact the news program you were watching for a follow up address.
