Plavix & Stroke [posted
10/1/98]
Question:I had a stroke that was determined to be the result of fibromuscular
dysplasia with dissected aneurysm. A subsequent angiogram indicates the damaged carotid is
healing. I am currently taking a drug called Plavix, as well as an aspirin a day. My
pharmacist knows little about this particular medication, and I would like some
information about its side effects, interactions with any medications or over the counter
medications. I'd also like to know more about the use of stents for treatment of this
disease, liklihood of reoccurence, or any other information about fibromuscular dysplasia
in the carotids that you can provide.
Answer: Fibromuscular dysplasia causes distortion of the arteries seen as "beading" on x-rays. Stents are occasionally used in renal arteries and the like where emboli(from the stent) is not critical. We really don't know the long term effects of stents in this disease. Generally, we avoid them in the carotid due to the risk of emboli during the procedure and afterwards. Time will tell if this is the correct approach. Plavix is a recently added anti-platelet drug.
