Carafate
Question: I have been on Carafate for about 2.5 years, My doctor has decreased the dosage every 6 months and I am currently taking only 1 tablet at bedtime. I would just like to know if there are any known side effects to taking Carafate for so long.

Answer: Carafate(sulcrafate) is a relatively unique treatment for gastritis and ulcer disease. It apparently coats denuded areas of the stomach and aids in their healing. This coating prevents acid from increasing the damage and the drug is fairly effective. It doesn't appear that any of the drug is absorbed-consequently, at this time it looks like there are no long term side effects.
