Question:10 days of Septra in the first two weeks gestation-what are the potential risks?

Answer:Septra(trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole) is an oral antibiotic used for many different types of infections. The most popular use is in treating urinary tract infections. Since women tend to have the predonderance of UTIs, women will occasionally find themselves pregnant after taking this drug. Septra has been shown to cause cleft palates in rats and is a folic acid antagonist-a potential cause of fetal defects. However, in studies done to date no significant fetal abnormalities in pregnancy generally or in the first trimester have been described. Septra is not a drug used preferentially during pregnancy;however, the risk of accidental use appear to be minimal.
