Question: My wife was on stadol and became chemically dependent. I understand the rate of chemical dependence is very high with stadol and it is being reviewed by the FDA. Could you tell me the status of this drug at this time?

Answer: The FDA keeps a close eye on the addiction potential of drugs and they get moved up/down on the weathc lists depending on the national experience - both legal dependence and illegal dependence. Stadol has been appearing on the streets with increasing illegal use, a bad sign. Whether the FDA will change the status of the drug is in their court.

Rehabilitation from Stadol NS [posted 7/21/98]
Question: Is there a way to get rehabilitation from Stadol NS, outside of the traditional rehab centers? With such medications for cigarette smokers as Zyban, is there something like this for Stadol NS?

Answer: It might be, another potentially useful drug is clonidine, used commonly in narcotic withdrawal. Sometimes, local user groups, similar to AA, but with narcotics will sponsor one in withdrawal without the "clinic", this you will have to research locally among other users.

Question:Is stadol habit forming and sold on the streets? Who makes the vaccine for anthrax and is available to purchase?

Answer: Stadol(botorphanol tartrate) is synthetic derivation of opiate agonist. In plain language, this means it is a designed drug which blocks certain receptors that the body uses for the effect of opium. It is used medically for analgesia or pain relief and to reverse some of the side effects of narcotic analgesia. It is available in injectable form or as a nasal spray. The nasal spray is often effective in treatment of migraine headaches. It should not be used in individuals who are dependent on narcotics because of its opiate antagonist properties - withdrawal can ensue. I'm really not in a position to tell you about illegal availability.
