Thorazine General Information
Question: My mother who is in her mid-seventies is going through a deep depression in addition to electroshock she is being given thorazine. It seems to help. Why was this drug not given in first place? Does it help long term? Dangerous side efeects?

Answer: Thorazine is a major tranquilizer, used to suppress agitation and thought disorders. It is usually used after lesser strength drugs have been effective. "Save the big guns for last", the only serious long term potential disorder is tardive dyskinesia. This is an involuntary smacking of the lips and grimmacing which is completely irreversible once it occurs. Seen in about 10% of long term patients;but, to be avoided if possible. Some patients also experience malignant hyperthermia. This is uncontrolled temperature regulation of the body and can be fatal. This usually occurs right away or not at all. But, occasionally will occur after time on the drug.

Answer: Thorazine is a major sedative used to treat psychosis generally. Occasionally used for general agitation, but is very strong for less severe agitation/anxiety.

Question: I was given 25 mg tablets of chlorpromazine hydrocloride after Valium only let me sleep for a very short period of time. I was having a severe reaction to the Septra and an itchy beet red rash all over my body. The rash was not even slightly alleviated by benadryl and hydrocortisone orally or through an I.V. I am also taking prednisone (5 mg tabs 12 - 2 days, 8 - 3 days, etc.) and hydroxzine 25 mg tabs for the itching. The last time I took Thorazine was Sunday evening, after I had two small doses of valium and a dose of Thorazine the doctor put in my I.V. I took one 25 mg tab of it when I got home and I have been not quite with it and very sleepy since. When will the fog clear?

Answer: Yes, probably somewhat due to the polypharmacy that has been required to treat your drug reaction.
