Vantin [posted 1/8/99]
Question: Will Vantin inhibit or alter the effectiveness of birth control pills?
Answer: I'd check specifically with the manufacturer.
Vantin
Question: Are there any side effects when using Vantin? I was on augmentin for an
infection and developed loose bowels and had to switch.
Answer: Vantin(cefpodoxime proxetil) is a semi-synthetic antibiotic of the cephalosporin class. It is a broad spectrum antibiotic which is used in several different types of infections. Since it is similar to penicillin, it tends to have similar effect. However, some of the side groups are changed from traditional cephalosporins to expand its uses. There is about a 5-10% cross reactivity in terms of allergies to penicillin. Side effects are similar to penicillin type drugs-- the diarrhea is due to killing of endogenous bacteria in the colon leading to diarrhea. This is seen in any antibiotic.

Question: The use of "VANTIN" and the associated dosages.
Answer: Vantin is the brand name for Cefpodoxime, which is in the cephalosporin
class of antibiotics. Like all cephalosporins, it is relatively resistant to
beta-lactamase enzymes produced by bacteria. These enzymes are produced to destroy
penicillin and penicillin like antibiotics and are one of the causes of penicillin
resistance in different bacteria. With its broad activity against both gram positive and
gram negative bacteria, this class of antibiotics is used in multiple clinical settings.
It is commonly used in respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, pelvic and
sexually transmitted diseases and skin infections. It is availible in liquid suspension
and tablets(100 and 200mg). The dose varies with the type of infection and weight of the
patient, but should rarely be above 400 mg twice a day.
