Artinoids
Question: I am trying to get information on contact ulcers on the vocal cords, or artinoids. What therapies are recommended?
Answer: Ulcers on the vocal cords and surrounding areas are usually due to acid reflux from the
stomach. The esophagus and upper parts of the vocal and respiratory tract are not designed
to tolerate acid pH. Usually focusing on decreasing acid with either an H2 blocker (available
over the counter like Tagamet, Zantac, or Pepcid) or newer agents like Prilosec is the first place
to start. A regiment to mechanically decrease reflux by elevating the head of the bed and
avoiding late meals can also be effective. Lastly, drugs like Propulsid which affect GI
motility, are used for reflux if the above is not effective.
