Question: My 76 year old father had 2 "brain bleeds" in a period of one week. During recovery in ICU, he was extremely agitated and had paranoid delusions. In the hospital, they had to restrain him because it was so severe. They prescribed Dilantin and Resperdal which have calmed him down considerably. However, he is now experiencing hallucinations along with the paranoid delusions. My question is, is his behavior the result of his strokes or the medication? His doctors are taking a "wait and see" attitude and I'm afraid if it's the drugs causing the hallucinations, that they should be adjusted.
Answer: You won't know until there is time for both resolution of any brain swelling and giving your dad time to get out of the hospital avoiding the confusion that comes from an unfamiliar surroundings.
