Chocolate and Medication [posted 8/13/98]
Question: My mother is 73 years old and is taking the drugs Zoloft, Moban and Ambien. My mother loves chocolate a lot and eats about 12 pieces of it a day. Can all this caffeine be harmful with any of this medication? I know some medicines you should not have a lot of caffeine with. Are any of these drugs one of them and which one should she not take caffeine (candy) with.

Answer: Chocolate mainly contains a chemical called theobromide - same family as caffeine, but slightly different. There is no evidence of any major interaction with these medications, although less would be recommended.
