Question: I have a 9-year-old boy who has been taking Risperdal (2mg/day) for 2 years to control aggressive behavior which makes it difficult for him to learn in school. He was born Deaf and developmentally delayed due to a CMV infection. A CT scan showed calcification in his frontal lobe and nearby areas. Before risperdal, we had tried giving him Depakote, but it didn't work well. The Risperdal helps with the agression but since he began taking it, he has had trouble with bedwetting as well as what seems like an inability to sense when he has to urinate or to control his bladder for very long once he does notice that he has to go.
I know there is not much info on Risperdal and children but have you come across any reports of side effects involving the bladder?

Answer: No, but there is lots of information on helping children with bed wetting. There are several systems which awake the child with any urine on the sheets, thus providing a behavioral feedback so that the child can learn to awaken prior to urinating. Also, I would ensure that he can concentrate his urine properly(check a first am urine for specific gravity). If he cannot concentrate, focusing on concentrating the urine will be the answer.
