HMO

Question: what are your feelings re:HMO? patient or profit?

Answer:HMOs are like most products-some are good and some are bad. They certainly have been directed at a chronic problem in medicine-copious tests with no regard for effectiveness or cost. I think HMOs can be fine if they are selected correctly and if you have no major medical problems. They tend to favor patients without chronic disease. They also tend not to be very preventive oriented-unless it is very cheap. Long term prevention of coronary disease, etc. is not highly stressed. Shop for your primary care physician very carefully. They can be your major advocate in these systems.
