Question: I was recently prescribed 20mg Paxil for anxiety attacks. I didn’t think I had any problem with anxiety or depression before (i’m 40), but upon reflection of my history i decided to give it a try to see. I took the medication for 6 weeks and decided to terminate mainly because of the increase in herpes outbreaks (but i had alot of gastro side affects, loss of appetite, weight loss). I had some pretty strong withdrawal symptoms on day 2 and 3 following discontinuation (irritability, hyperactivity, etc)… those have subsided but since right before i terminated i have been plagued by this neuralgia that normally preceeds an outbreak but eventually goes away within 5-7 days. It has been three weeks now and i’m still experiencing this neuralgia in my vaginal/perianal area, with sharp pains occasionally around my cervix… i have no vessicles present and i’m wondering two things: 1)is this a result of the paxil and if so when can i expect this to pass, 2) do you think i’m experiencing an outbreak and am i infectious?

Ibuprofin doesn’t seem to help relieve the pain/irritation… what do you recommend?

Answer: I haven’t seen this with Paxil, but it would seem to me that treatment with an antiviral might be in order.
