Question: I used to sing.I have had hoareness now since Aug 1998.It is a little better now
But at one time my speaking voice was very quivery and strained, and it takes very very
deep breaths to speak at all. Speaking is some betterbut the symptoms still linger with singing along with pain.

Answer: I assume they looked at your cords? Gargling with hot salt water(one tablespoon in a large glass of water) 5-6 times a day. Rest your voice and take OTC acid suppressives like zantac or pepcid. You will need to take double the OTC level to get prescriptive doses. Many patients experience acid reflux which inflammes their cords, I don’t have any history, but it is one of the few recurring problems you can fix. Most singers have the most trouble resting their voice. Overuse or acid reflux are the usual culprits.
