Lipid Management [posted 7/24/98]
Question: I wish to know if I should prescribe Lopid with Lipitor? Problem is a mixed hyperlipidemia in a 50 year old female who had a thrombotic stroke several years ago, suffers stable angina, has her HbgA1c down to 6.8 and is not controlled on diet and 40 mg of Lipitor. Triglycerides are still high and am therefore unable to measure LDL-Cholesterol.
Answer: I’d probably use Questran first to see if she can take the side effects of the drug. This would be safer. However, I have used the combination very effectively, you just have to watch liver functions and CPK values more closely-every 3-4 weeks at first.
