Dilanton
Question: I have read that Dilantin (phenytoin) has been proven the most clinically effective substance for preventing motion sickness. What is your opinion of this and other preventatives ?
Answer: I’ve never used dilantin to treat motion sickness-intriguing thought. The best previous drug was the scopolamine patch placed behind the ear. Unfortunately, no longer available for reasons that are not clear.
Actual Cause
Question: I teach a section in my class on the vestibular system and tell my class that when information from the eyes disagrees with the vestibular organs, motion sickness often results. My students often ask how Dramamine and various remedies work in relieving the symptoms. I am hoping you can help me answer their questions. I appreciate your time.
Answer: I’d love to but, we really don’t know. Somehow the sedation reduces the symptoms without completely preventing the problem.
