Pathology

Question: I am doing a project on pathology. Please answer the following questions concerning a pathologist:

1. Salary?

2. Related Occupations?

3. Employment Outlook?

4. Job Description?

5. Benefits?

6. Education and Training?

Answer: I am not a pathologist so I can’t answer with perfect clarity. Salary is about $30,000 for residency and rises (depending on whether a fellowship is done) to $130 – $250,000 a year. This is very dependent on work environment. The number of pathologists is probably in excess of current need. HMO and prepaid groups are putting large amounts of pressure on Pathologists to decrease fees and cut numbers of pathologists in hospitals, labs etc. There are many different jobs available to a pathologist depending on whether they concentrate on Surgical Pathology or Clinical Pathology. The surgical type usually reads slides and tissues. The clinical type usually runs a lab. Some pathologists do both. I would recommend talking to the head of Pathology at one of your local hospitals.
