Question: My right gland in my throat is very swollen for the past 3weeks. And now there is much pain associated with this, and I can see white puss on the side of my throat. My doctor told me to take Augmentin 500ml, 2times a day, for the next 10days to kill off the bacterial growth. My question is : what can I take for the extreme pain in my throat (when i swallow) and my right ear (as I believe the infection has moved to my ear)? Also should I slowly notice an improvement in my condition within the next few days?
Answer: Tylenol is ok, aspirin also if you don’t have any gi problems/history. Using the two together is synergistic. If this is insufficient, add an antihistamine available OTC at the pharmacy(benadryl, chlortrimeton etc) for added pain relief. Heat is usually helpful.

Question: I have, for 3 weeks, been experiencing a sore throat, nasal congestion, earaches, swollen lymph nodes in neck, and a tickling, irritating cough. Dr. diagnosed allergies, and put me on claritin D (later just claritin after D made me sleepless). Most symptoms have cleared, but the cough and sore throat linger. Also sore throat comes and goes. Can allergies actually cause a VERY sore throat, such as I am experiencing? Should the medication make it go away?
Answer: Allergies can cause sore throats, but generally do not. Common causes would be acid coming up from your stomach and inflamming your upper airway. Try an OTC like zantac, if not better someone needs to look at your vocal cords.
