Pinworms and Pregnancy [posted
1/6/99]
Question:I am in my 20th week of pregnancy and have recurring pinworms. Neither my
OB/GYN or primary care physician has treated pinworms. They are unsure if I should be
treated. Is it safe for me to take Vermox? What does pregnancy category 3 drug mean?
Please advise on this drug or others for treatment.

Answer: Well, we never know the true risks, but we come up with
categories based on studies in rats and observed human reactions in those circumstances
when one is treated and didn’t know that one was pregnant. I would not take the drug while
pregnant, pinworms are irritating, but not fatal, nor a cause of fetal impairment.
