Question: I experience occasional, yet sometimes severe, panic attacks that have greatly impacted my life. Due to my Thalacemia (sp?), drugs like Paxil and Effexor have caused my liver enzymes to rise higher than usual (they’re usually abnormally high because of my anemia). Is there an SSRI or similar drug I can take that won’t impact my liver negatively, or carry cirrosis as a possible side effect?

Answer: None of them carry cirrhosis as a side effect, but elevations in your liver functions need to be watched carefully. I don’t think any would be superior to the others, but try them one at a time.
