Question: I have been given Arthrotec 50 mg to treat a ruptured disc in my lower back. I take both diovan and norvasc for hypertension, and the Arthrotec info sheet says I should not take Arthotec with an ace inhibitor. Info on diovan is confusing — is it an ace inhibitor or not? Should I take Arthrotec with these drugs? Where can I get more info? The doctor who prescribed Arthrotec indicated there was no problem. Thanks.

Answer: Diovan is a angiotensin receptor blocker. There is a caution in the PDR about it’s potential to decrease renal blood flow in the presence of ACE inhibitors. However, clinically, I have never seen this and it is a reversable problem with stopping the Arthrotec. Although diovan is a different class of drug, it would probably have similar risks in occasional patients. But, watch your blood pressure while taking it. Any of the non-steroidals can increase sodium retention and raise your blood pressure(a differnt problem than referred to above).
