Question: I am 6 weeks pregnant and currently taking 15 mg of Paxil daily. Is taking Paxil a threat to my unborn child? Also, what affect does caffeine have on my unborn child as well? I am used to drinking two cups of coffee a day and when I found out that I was pregnant, I stopped. I find myself unable to function and stay awake at work during the day. Could I possible have a half a cup of coffee a day?
Answer: Caffeine does not appear to be a problem in usual doses. Paxil has not been studied and will not be due to ethical issues. Paxil is a Class C drug-meaning animal studies have shown problems. In the literature, currently not a large issue-but no clear information.
