Effect of Cephalexin on Oral Contraceptives [posted 8/4/98]

Question: I was on the antibiotic cephalexin for 10 days. I am also taking

ortho tri-cyclen (birth control pills). I started the cephalexin about 2 days

before my period ended, which means I started the white pills two days

later (after being on cephalexin for 2 days). The doctor told me that it could

lower the effectiveness of my pill. Does this also mean that it could cause

other problems like breast tenderness, nausea, and cramps? I have been on

the pill about a year and all of these signs went away about three months ago.

Did the antibiotic have an affect on my pill to increase the cramps and pain

associated with taking the pill?

Answer: If there were to be an effect it would only be for the duration of the medication and possibly a

week or so afterward. This would not be expected to last 3-4 months. Also, the effect of

cephalosporins are usually pretty minimal concerning interactions with birth control pills.

Cephalexin Side Effect [posted 7/30/98]

Question: My daughter has been on different antibiotics for 16 months for mild

acne. Two months ago she began having stomach cramping and general off

and on abdominal pain. Could this be due to the cephalexin?

Answer: Yes.

Question: I have been on antibiotics for a couple years to keep a

clear face. My family

doctor put me on cephalexin a couple months ago, instead

of the antibiotic I was on, because my husband and I are

trying to have a baby. Could this medicine be harmful to

the baby?

Answer: Probably not.
