Question: IS IT TRUE THAT BEING ON THE BLOOD PRESSURE DRUG “DILTRAZEM” CAUSES YOU TO GAIN WEIGHT? SINCE I HAVE BEEN ON THE DRUG ALL I HAVE BEEN DOING IS GAINING. I EXERCISE AND WATCH WHAT I EAT AND IT DOES NO GOOD.

Answer: Diltiazem does not usually cause weight gain for most patients.

Aches & Pains

Question: Can you tell me if diltiazem HCL can cause generalized aches and pains. I have been taking Tiazac brand for two years and have had increasing discomfort. My MD has now prescribed Elavil for the pain . I’m reluctant to take a second drug at risk of more side effects.

Answer: Uncommon ;but, possible. Has any diagnostic work up been done? This would include checking for lupus, Rheumatoid Arthritis and Fibromyalgia(trigger points). It sounds like he thinks you have Fibromyalgia since Elavil is one treatment option. Why can’t you take a holiday and keep your pressure(or whatever) under control with a different calcium channel antagonist? They differ markedly in structure and side effects as opposed to other classes of drugs.
