Diuretics [posted 7/17/98]
Question: Is Hydrochlorothiazide (Merck) the generic version of Triamteren/HCTZ (Geneva Pharm.)? Are there any complications associated with Hydrochlorothiazide?
Answer: These are not equivalent drugs. The triamterene is a potassium sparing diuretic that is paired
with hydrochlorthiazide(hctz) to avoid some of the risk of low potassium with hctz. The usual
risks are low potassium, sodium, elevated cholesterol, elevated glucose.
