Question: I am having itchy scalp and hair loss on the top of my head and in the temple areas. I had thick hair and it grew rapidly before the estrace. I was on Premarin .625 for 10 years and finaly a doctor realized I was allergic to the dye on the pills. This is when the estrace came about. A cosmetologist suggested Nioxin 2c and the cleanser and conditioner to use with it. Will the ingredients counteract the estrace? What other hormone can I take that will not cause hair loss? The ingredients in Nioxin 2c are: Amodimetthicone, Hyddrolyzed Mucooppoolysaccharrides, Panthenol, Soyaethyl mopholinium ethosulfate, hydroxpropyltrimonium, hydrolyzed wheat protein, wheat amino acids, yeast extract, cysteine, methionine, glutamine, boitin, benzalkonium chloride, linoleic acid, linoolenic acid, arachidonic acid, retinyl palmitate, ascorbic acid, cholecalciferol, citric acid, tocopherol, nacin, innositol, methyl nicotinate, polysobate-60, polysorbate-80, acetamide MEA, ginkgo extract, ginsing extract, saw palmetto extract, milk thistle extract, nettle extract, hops extract, balmm mint extract, phytic acid, superoxide dismuutase, pepperminy oil, diazolydiinyl urea, methylparaben, propylparaben. Thanks for your help.
Answer: The hair loss is probably due to conversion of estrogen to testerone which is usually the reason for a diffuse loss. The itchiness raises other questions however and I would suggest a biopsy and an evaluation by a dermatologist. Topical Rogaine is usally very effective in women(more than men) but requires daily use.
