Question: have used over the counter nasal sprays for years and am finally determined to get off. Dr. started by giving me steroids for inflamation, also flonase to be used once a day in the morning, he also said i could use a saline spray for dryness if needed. what to steriods have to do with nasal inflamation and is this a standard course of treatment for this problem.
Answer: Nasal steroids are commonly used for allergic rhinitis and nasal polyps. Due to their lack of systemic toxicity, they are used for other uses to see if they will provide the extra improvement needed to decrease nasal inflammation. This is pretty standard treatment, sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t.
