Question: I just started taking Hyzaar 50-12.5. I am aware of the most common side effects. However, I am unclear of alcohol use and its side effects while on the above medication. Typicaly alcohol is not a part of my daily routine. I do like a glass of wine occasionaly and socialy. In addition we are going on a long vacation very soon and I would like to know if I should refrain from alcohol use altogether.

Answer: There should be no interactions. Keep to moderate intake and observe your bp on the days that you imbibe. About 20% of patients have elevated bp due to alcohol. This is not an interactional problem with hyzaar, but a direct effect of the alcohol on your system.
