Imipram [posted 1/14/99]
Question: I was unable to locate any information about the above drug, Imipram HCL
(25mg.). It has been prescribed for my 9 year old grandson who has a mild case of A.D.D.,
and is depressed. I would like to know what the drug is, and what to expect.
Answer: Imipram is sold under the brand name Tofranil. It is an
antidepressant belonging to a class called tri-cyclic antidepressants. Side effects are
sedation, constipation, dry mouth and occasional cardiac irregularities. Long term side
effects do not appear to differ from short term. The major limitation with this class of
drug is sedation.
