Question: I have taken imitrex for years and it seems to be getting less effective for bad cluster migraines. I use both the tablets and the injections. The injections work within 15 min. but relief is usually 6 hours or less rather then the longer time it used to help. Anything new I can try. Also how much imitrex in the system is too much. Can you over dose?
Answer: Imitrex is not indicated for cluster migraines because it usually doesn’t work. However, if yours work-congratulations. It may be that these are really complex migraines and not clusters. Hence, trying preventatives-aspirin, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, seizure meds, neurontin, etc. may be of use. There are two additional drugs in this class. I’m not impressed that there is any clinical difference but, the companies do. Would be worth a try to try the other two. Hard to know about the limits of Imitrex dosing. No published data and the drug is relatively new.
