General Information

Question: Please advise drug information on Megestrol and any risk factors.

Answer: Megestrol is the generic name for Megace. This is a synthetic derivation of progesterone. It is commonly given to patients to stimulate appetite and put on weight. I have used in many patients with wasting syndromes ranging from AIDs to different cancers. Occasionally with elderly people who are losing weight. Like progesterone it can cause fluid retention, nausea, diarrhea. It also can cause a rash and impotence.
