Phenobarbital Side Effects [posted 7/31/98]

Question: What are the possible side effects of phenobarbital concerning sexual function and response? I have been taking this drug for 10 years, and the current dosage is 210 mg per day.

Answer: Usually seen right away or not at all. Sedation and drowsiness are the most common side effect, but some do experience decreased sexual drive and difficulty with orgasm. However, this would be uncommon if you did not experience it right away while taking the drug. Has your blood level been checked lately?
