Doctors’ Answers to “Frequently Asked Questions” – Protease Inhibitors

These comments are made for the purpose of discussion and should NOT be used as recommendations for or against therapies or other treatments. An individual patient is always advised to consult their own physician.

Protease Inhibitors

Question: Which of the three approved drugs would be the best to start

with for a person with low t-cells? Cross resistance is a concern.

Answer: Research and the use of different protease inhibitors is constantly ongoing. The “best” drug is a function of the individual and their ability to take the side effects of each drug. Some of the newer regimens will combine different protease inhibitors in an attempt to avoid drug resistance. I would discuss this with an infectious disease specialist or with a physician treating the HIV infection.
