Birth defects

Question:I’ve seen a lot of info on the long-term birth effects of accutane when taken by women, what are the risks in men?

Answer:Accutane(isotretinoin) is a medicine used primarily for Acne Vulgaris. It is a close relative of Vitamin A and acts to decrease sebaceous gland function. Accutane is very effective;but, is reserved for severe cases of acne due to its potential side effects. Women must be absolutely sure they are at no risk for pregnancy. The risk of Accutane on the fetus to cause birth defects is very real-women are usually required to sign a consent form not to become pregnant. Men are not affected in their sperm formation in terms of mutations. There have been reports of decreased sperm counts. Accutane can also cause very unusual
reaction including: pseudotumor cerebri(an increase in pressure in the brain looking like a sudden tumor) inflammatory bowel disease, and decreased night vision.
