Psoriasis Pustular
Question: I had been on a regimen of prednisone to halt an outbreak of
psoriasis. I was taking 20mg per day and stopped ‘cold turkey’ after 4 days of doses. Is there any risk of getting psoriasis pustular which can occur after going off steroids? If I do get pustular psoriasis…do I need to worry that it can be fatal or difficult to cure?
Answer: Stopping the steroids will not “cause” psoriasis. At that time the disease flares up again. Since we don’t really understand the cause of psoriasis, it is difficult to predict what causes flares of activity. Psoriasis can be fairly localized or involve many organs of the body. While people do die of psoriasis, this is generally marked involvement of large areas of skin and/or infections due to the treatment regimen.
